Stanley tunes social housing sector in to digital TV

June 28, 2006

With the rising demand for digital television and radio, local authorities and housing associations need to upgrade communal aerial systems to provide digital access for their residents, leading to a sharp increase in orders for Stanley Blick’s TV Distribution Systems.

An OFCOM Digital Progress Report earlier this year confirmed that by the end of February 2006, digital penetration had exceeded 70% of homes, giving the UK the highest digital TV penetration of any country in the world.

In communal social housing or blocks of flats, responsibility for upgrading old analogue communal systems to new Digital Integrated Reception Systems falls to the landlords and many turn to Stanley Blick which, with over 30 years experience of providing communal aerial solutions, has vast experience in the social housing sector.

Operating at the forefront of the market, Stanley Blick is a Sky Approved Communal Aerial Installer and a member of the Confederation of Aerial Industries (CAI).  As well as providing a design, installation and maintenance service, Stanley offers landlords surveys, budgetary costs and feasibility studies to help them decide on an upgrade policy.

Recognising that in the social housing sector, capital investment is not always freely available, Stanley Blick augments a highly competitive purchase option with a wide choice of alternative payment options.  A bespoke partnering package, for example, enables a complete design, installation and ongoing maintenance service to be provided for approximately £30 per annum per dwelling without the need for capital funding.

Andy Taylor, Stanley Blick’s business development director (local authority) comments: “As the analogue TV switch-off gathers pace, our TV Distribution Services division has become increasingly busy. We continue to demonstrate our experience in the social housing sector and underline the significant economies of scale we can offer to provide cost-effective digital TV distribution solutions.”

CCTV confusion leaves security exposed, warns Stanley

June 26, 2006

Image: CCTV Thousands of companies across the UK could find themselves unable to prosecute thieves, vandals and intruders - despite having CCTV footage of break-ins!

That’s the stark warning from security specialist, Stanley Security Solutions, who have identified that UK police requirements for digital CCTV Systems published by the Home Office last year are largely being overlooked.  And without the high quality footage needed to pursue a criminal investigation, UK businesses could be losing £millions by unwittingly increasing their security risks and even invalidating insurance cover.

Explains Matt Wheeler from Stanley Security Solutions: “The new guidelines were published over a year ago, but many companies seem to be unaware that there has been a change in requirements. Even amongst those that know there have been changes, there is widespread confusion about what’s required.  Effectively, this means that CCTV users are running systems that are inadequate, as footage would often not be sufficient for use by the police in any criminal investigation.  These companies need to update their understanding of what’s required and update their equipment before they are left counting the cost!”

In the Home Office guidelines, analogue CCTV video is no longer recommended as the preferred choice by police in criminal investigations and, when selecting a digital alternative, users are advised to consider quality, storage, export of images and playback facilities.

Wheeler continues: “It’s important that companies consider where their site is vulnerable before they specify a new CCTV system and select a product that will provide a high enough resolution picture from all relevant vantage points. Recorded pictures and print outs are not as clear as live images on some systems so a full test viewing is essential and, though the police have not set a minimum quality requirement on CCTV evidence, carrying out a test to check how recognisable individuals are on the system is advisable.”

Under the revised requirements, CCTV users must ensure that their system is capable of storing at least 31 days worth of recorded footage in a secure environment. It should be capable of exporting both video and stills to a removable storage medium at original quality and the time and date should be accurately available for each picture.  Playback software should have variable speed control, display single and multiple cameras, permit recordings from each camera to be searched by time and date and allow printing or saving of specific pictures with the time and date of recording.

Wheeler adds: “The purpose of the guidelines is to make gathering CCTV evidence easier and ensure that it is more reliable in court.  All Stanley digital CCTV solutions are fully compliant with Home Office guidelines and providing the police with evidence-standard images is within reach of all CCTV users.  Unfortunately, at the moment, it seems to be companies that have found their systems to be inadequate following a break in that are driving upgrade to effective digital systems and I would urge all companies that rely on their CCTV for security to ask themselves whether what they have in place is really enough.”

STANLEY SECURITY SOLUTIONS ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF STANLEY SECURITY PRODUCTS

New Business Unit Designed to Drive Growth, Better Serving the Needs of Existing and New Customers through Dealer and Reseller Distribution Channels

Indianapolis, IN., – June 8, 2006

Stanley Security Solutions, Inc., a provider of access control and security solutions, today formally introduced the Stanley Security Products Group (SPG) chartered to lead Stanley Security Solutions’ reseller strategy focused on distributing its products and services through a network of Stanley authorized dealers and resellers.

Designed to drive growth and better serve the needs of existing and new customers, this end-to-end strategy will deliver these products through multiple channels and increase operating efficiencies. This action will dramatically expand sales of Stanley Security Solutions’ in-house products in North America.

Fundamental to SPG’s strategy is the delivery of complete solutions, leveraging its platforms, through consultant and systems integrators and resellers. A network of systems resellers is already aligned around SPG video products with deep knowledge of specific market and application areas such as banking and finance.

Initially, the distribution channels will consist of security dealers, as well as a continuing original equipment manufacturer (OEM) relationship with Bosch Security Systems Inc., and Stanley Systems Integration.  They will immediately benefit from increased access to Regional Sales Managers able to train and assist in customer demonstrations of both Stanley® VIP® NVR and DVR solutions and Stanley® PAC® Access Control and Security Solutions.

The acquisition of PAC International, a 30-year pioneer in access control and Intivid is the entry point for SPG in the US security market. The combination integrates two healthy, profitable companies with similar cultures and values.

“Based on its deep knowledge of the security industry, as well as its experience with advanced security technologies, the creation of Stanley Security Products was designed to expand sales of its in-house products in North America through dealer and reseller distribution channels,” said Andrew Michie, sales and marketing manager, Stanley Security Products.  “We are confident that expanding our products and solutions into dealer and reseller channels will ultimately benefit our customers.”

Stanley® PAC®

Capitalizing on years of experience, the Stanley® PAC® product has been engineered to provide a complete and uncompromising single source security solution which dramatically improves the access control and security experience of every kind of security user—from businesses with a single site, to global organizations with multiple locations.

Its list of impressive features means the Stanley PAC product can be individually tailored to meet specific security requirements. Three scalable packages starting from 20-doors are available to suit the size of the access control installation. Its modular and open architecture based on Microsoft’s .NET and CE.NET platforms enables administrators to integrate increasingly sophisticated capabilities through flexible software extensions as needs change and grow, extending the product life cycle and providing the best return on a company's investment.

The Stanley PAC product is a completely integrated security solution that incorporates access control, alarm monitoring, video imaging, card printing, card encoding, messaging, CCTV, DVR and NVR management as well as interface to third party applications, in a single user-friendly environment. It links to the Stanley Alarm and Access Server (PAC 500), which incorporates a built-in Firewall over Ethernet using TCP/IP and encrypted Secure Socket Layers (SSL) technology. Full support is offered for both the Stanley 500 controller series as well as legacy existing 2100/2200 controller-based systems.

Stanley® VIP®

With its technology and integration expertise, the Stanley® VIP® product is a scalable, digital (DVR) and network (NVR) recorder solution sets a new standard in cost effectiveness, flexibility and performance.

The VIP adaptable architecture allows users to re-use existing CCTV infrastructure of analog switchers, multiplexers, monitors and coaxial cabling, while extending their functionality through integration to the enterprise network and creating a “Hybrid System” system with IP cameras. This protects an existing CCTV investment while taking advantage of the latest digital video technologies.

The video images are stored in the VIP database, where they can be quickly located, retrieved and viewed locally or remotely using the VIP advanced search capabilities. In addition, the VIP system is tightly integrated with Stanley PAC Access Control Administration Software, providing alarm and event activated recording so that you only capture the video you need, when you most need it.

Stanley Authorized Reseller Program

The Stanley Authorized Reseller Program is a partnership program where qualified security integrators are certified by Stanley. Membership in the Stanley Authorized Reseller Program gives integrators the benefit of affiliation with one of the most valued brands in the world. They also get sales, marketing, comprehensive technical support and business support, special access to products and events, and unequaled training opportunities.

SPG Corporate Structure:

Gerry Wood will lead the group with Regional Sales Managers reporting directly to Andrew Michie, Sales and Marketing Manager in the US:

  • John Colgan – Eastern US and Central/Eastern Canada
  • Ken Bassett – Central US
  • Mark Creighton – Western US and Western Canada

In the complex world of security, support is often the critical deciding factor. Steve Lee, Technical Manager, will lead an experienced support team that includes Charles Christian, Technical Specialist and Lovister Phillip, Technical Specialist.

Over the coming year, these key individuals will play an integral role in the group’s strategic growth, with a focus on enhancing dealer reach and improving operational efficiencies and profitability. TV show is no joke for ‘Big Shot’ Alan as Bright Sparks prove business is child’s play

June 7, 2006

Image: Beat the Boss A high-flying businessman from Hamilton was brought down to earth by a team of kids when he took part in CBBC’s new hit tea-time show, Beat The Boss recently.

Alan McKeeve (27), a sales executive with Stanley Security Solutions, was one of three successful business people in a team called the Big Shots, taking on the Bright Sparks, a team of young schoolchildren, in a challenge to design a brand new practical joke.

But in the world of electric shock handshakes, itching powder and stink bombs, the business ‘gurus’ were no match for the creative kids, their ‘Screaming Diary’ idea losing out to the ‘FP3’, a fart machine modelled on an MP3 player.

Defeat was a bitter blow for Alan who just a couple of months ago was celebrating success in the UK National Sales Awards where he won Young Sales Professional of the Year for his sales success out of Stanley Security Solutions’ Glasgow office.

It was that award that led to Alan being invited to take part in the new show, which is hosted by The Apprentice star, Saira Khan, and broadcast weekdays on CBBC1.

Alan, who spent several days filming the show in London, said it had been a great experience: “It’s amazing the opportunities thrown up by the Sales Award success and appearing on this show was a great thrill. Believe me, our team was doing its best to beat the Bright Sparks, but when you lose out to a fart-machine, it’s probably time to admit some things are best left to the kids.”

Stanley keeps ‘EasiWatch®’ over mounting site security costs

12th April 2006

With the cost of construction site theft in the UK estimated at between £600million and £1 billion* every year, it’s no wonder security and insurance budgets are mounting. It’s an issue that Stanley Security Solutions has tackled head on with the launch of ‘EasiWatch®’, a cost effective, mobile CCTV system developed specifically for construction site use.

Designed to tackle issues of plant theft and site vandalism, as well as enable construction firms to keep a close watch on potential employee malpractice and health & safety issues, the redeployable EasiWatch® system is as quick and easy to erect as site fencing and integrates seamlessly with any existing CCTV equipment. Because EasiWatch® cameras are streamline and fully mountable, they can be installed anywhere on site and offer a full 3600 view for total site monitoring. Images from the wireless surveillance system can then be beamed direct to an existing control desk or to the EasiWatch® portable briefcase which can be used for remote monitoring, control the cameras’ orientation and record all images received.

Explains Matt Wheeler, Marketing Manager at Stanley Security Systems: “Traditional CCTV systems are both costly and time intensive to install, and even after that considerable investment, they often have blind spots that can leave the site exposed to theft and vandalism. The EasiWatch® system can be installed or re-deployed in less than an hour, offering a flexible and cost effective boost to the operator’s existing CCTV provision wherever there is a need for a security top up.”

With the option of Stanley’s in-house finance partnership, which ensures there are no assets to write off and no expensive outlay, the EasiWatch® is also extremely cost effective. Matt Wheeler continues: “Because there is no capital outlay, there is no drain on cash flow and we offer a unique warranty for the term of the agreement to provide total peace of mind. Full installation, integration and training are also included as part of the package, so this really is a ‘plug in and go’ system that can be used throughout the lifecycle of a specific site or to trouble shoot across a number of sites.”

All cameras are both vandal-proof and weather-proof, and Stanley Security Solutions offers a 24-hour nationwide support and maintenance service to ensure effective site monitoring night and day.

Matt Wheeler adds: “With false injury claims and petty theft from employees or subcontractors pushing up the costs of running a building site, the need for effective security is greater than ever before. Our aim in developing the EasiWatch® System was to provide a cost-efficient and flexible CCTV solution that not only reduces site crime but drives down the costs of doing so.”

Stanley brings an integrated approach to Residential Care

5th April 2006

Creating a safer and more comfortable environment for the patients in their charge is one of the fundamental duties of any residential care environment.  Stanley Security Solutions have now made this easier than ever with a groundbreaking integrated security and communications package.

For the first time, Stanley’s Residential Care Solution integrates patient care systems with security, communications and staff management infrastructures to offer a completely joined up package that can be tailored to meet the needs of each individual institution.

Explains Matt Wheeler, marketing manager of Stanley Security Solutions: “In a residential care home, security systems, patient monitoring and staff communication systems need to work together to provide a safe environment.  However, it is essential that the technology provided to help protect patients and assist staff does not become intrusive.  That’s why our Residential Care Solutions package is not only interfaced so that all individual solutions run together smoothly, but is also flexible enough that we can tailor it around the bespoke needs of each customer.”

Stanley’s Residential Care Solutions uses the very latest technology to ensure that both patients and their families have complete peace of mind while respecting the need for privacy and comfort.  Systems available as part of the integrated package include CCTV monitoring, Gemini™ Nursecall systems, visual visitor verification which provides real time images of visitors on patients’ TV screens, and Wanderguard®, a system designed to protect against patient wandering that utilises a small signalling device worn on the patient’s wrist to trigger an alarm if they are close to an open exit route.

Working in tandem with these patient comfort and wellbeing systems are access control and staff protection solutions designed to ensure the building and staff remain secure.  Comments Matt Wheeler: “Both patients and their visitors want to feel that their home is welcoming and accessible, but there are very real security issues to be overcome as care homes are often a target for criminals in search of valuable equipment or drugs.  That’s why Stanley’s Residential Care Solutions provides a layered approach to security that can be as simple as keypad access or as sophisticated as integrated access control covering several doors or even multiple sites.”

Stanley’s Residential Care Solutions package also incorporates fire detection and evacuation software, including the groundbreaking Saffire® system which uses vibration and visual alerts to ensure deaf patients are aware of danger in the event of fire.

Stanley has also factored in the communication and scheduling challenges of running a 24/7 operation with a mobile workforce to its integrated offering.  A market leader in time and attendance systems, Stanley can tailor specific solution to meet individual requirements.  Making the most of the latest communications technology, the company also offers radio paging and digital telephone systems to ensure staff are contactable and updated, wherever they are.

Matt Wheeler continues: “Residential care patients deserve to know that they are being offered the best possible care and, with security, communication and staff management issues taken care of by integrated technology, staff are free to concentrate on their core role of providing that care.”

Stanley Security Systems offers a partnership approach to design, installation and training in integrated Residential Care Solutions and provides flexible financing arrangements to enable institutions to keep pace with technology without the burden of capital outlay.

Stanley highlights the need for improved A&E staff protection

2nd March 2006

As a new report confirms that violent attacks on nursing staff continue to increase, one of the UK’s leading security specialists, Stanley Security Solutions has launched its own campaign to try and improve staff safety in hospitals.

A quarter of the 2,800 nurses surveyed by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said they had been physically assaulted, whilst the situation was even worse within accident and emergency (A&E) departments with almost 80% of nurses reporting they had been assaulted in the past year.  The Department of Health confirmed there has been a 15-fold increase in prosecutions for attacks on NHS staff.

The RCN report comes as Stanley Security Solutions launches a new initiative to increase awareness of its Minder staff protection solutions and it intends to make A&E departments the initial focus of its campaign.

Stanley’s Blick Minder Staff Protection solutions are the ideal choice for all hospital employees, but particularly lone workers, staff in high risk areas such as A&E, or wards such as maternity with full 24 hour operation.  The Minder products provide fast, reliable and secure two-way messaging and the system can be easily set up to allow monitoring to begin immediately.

The product range includes Datacall Guardian, ideal for small numbers of lone workers, Datacall Minder which protects staff in isolated areas and Adept Minder which relies on cellular LAN or WAN technology and has voice and text functions for increased security in high risk areas.

Stanley Security Solutions’ campaign to make both NHS and Private Trusts aware of the increased necessity for staff protection programmes will be launched this month.

One of the first sites to benefit from Stanley’s Minder System has been The Royal Victoria Hospital in Blackpool, part of the Fylde and Wyre Hospitals NHS Trust. The physical layout of its new A&E department compounded the threat of violence against staff and, as a result, from the outset a radio-based Minder System was installed.

The Minder System, including 40 mobiles carried by individual staff, allows mobile users to initiate several different types of alarm, providing a quick and easy way of summoning assistance either for medical reasons or in case of an assault.  As a direct result of its successful introduction, the adjacent Parkwood Psychiatric Hospital also ordered a Minder System with 100 mobiles.

Commenting on Stanley’s timely campaign, marketing manager Matt Wheeler said: “Whilst our products are already being used in hospitals all over the world, the latest statistics on nursing staff attacks underline the scale of the security problem that remains in many UK hospitals.  We’ll be driving forward the message that effective security systems can help protect not just individual hospital staff but also their patients, buildings and equipment.”
